![]() ![]() ![]() Although he was talking about his Pebble Beach address at the time, so I don't think he was actually hurting for cash. He did get a fair chunk of change for the Vampire$ movie (schlocky as it was), but he was in the throws of a divorce at the time and pretty much had to sign the check over to his ex. I hope eventually that he comes out of it, though, 'cause he could tell a story like few people I have ever had the pleasure to listen to. He had a hard time coming up with a new take on his one good idea. Steakley wrote in an interview that he wanted to pay tribute to Heinleins Starship Troopers by doing something he felt Heinlein could not : write really fluid action scenes. You'll note that even in Vampire$ the protagonists are named Felix and Jack Crow. Its a splatterpunk sci-fi tale of armoured suits, survival instincts, and millions of murderous aliens on a dustball called Banshee. Quite simply he has (or had, anyway) the mother of all cases of writer's block. I met him a couple of years ago at the World Fantasy Convention and my poor sad liver was still working hard to clear my system *days* later. he mostly drinks Dewers though - out of 64oz Big Gulp glasses - OK, not *literally* but, maaaaan John could knock 'em back. ![]()
